The Hut Little Jumby
Little Jumby Island, Antigua & Barbuda

Our friends at The Hut Colwell Bay on the Isle of Wight got in touch in January 2024 with an exciting proposition: could we help fit out their new venture, The Hut on Little Jumby Island, Antigua! Having already made the bespoke Tricoya table tops for their restaurant back home, we were glad to collaborate again, this time on a bigger scale.

The brief called for five substantial freestanding pieces: two waiter stations, a large bar, a reception desk and a DJ booth.

Antigua's climate is humid, hot, and prone to sudden weather swings, which meant material choice was critical from the outset. We built primarily in Accoya and Tricoya, sustainable engineered timbers manufactured specifically for demanding outdoor use. Acetylation modifies the cell structure of the wood, so it resists rot and holds up to extremes that would defeat most timber, while still taking paint beautifully.

For the finish, we turned to Teknos Futura 20, a semi-matt, water-based system we've trusted on past projects. Its microporous structure lets it move with Antigua's shifting temperatures rather than cracking under them, and hand-finishing gave a flawless, almost sprayed look. Just as importantly, it can be re-coated in future, a practical necessity for pieces that'll see heavy daily use in a busy beach restaurant.

Worktops throughout are solid acrylic Corian, chosen for durability as much as looks. Drawers run on Austrian-made Grass Dynapro 40kg soft-close concealed runners, and every handle is a British-made solid brass cup pull or cabinet knob in an antique brass finish. To bring in a rustic Caribbean beach bar character, each station is clad in H4-treated rough-sawn pine, sealed and painted to match.

Function was built in throughout, pre-cut channels and removable panels for sockets and switches, so wiring could be fitted without compromising the clean lines. The two waiter stations house integrated drawer fridges, cash tills and pull-out bins. The bar carries heavy-duty soft-close cutlery drawers, a central pull-out bin, generous general storage, bespoke menu holders and a cupboard with an adjustable shelf. The reception desk keeps things simpler, two drawers, two open sections for box files, and a drop-down Corian top that conceals the screen beneath, with a deep return behind the ball-nosed edge for guests to lean on or rest their things. The DJ booth was the cleverest of the five! A removable lid turns it into a usable surface day-to-day, then lifts away and stows in a purpose-built slot beneath the main shelf whenever the booth's needed for its real job.

A final touch, bespoke stencils of The Hut's logo on the cladding tied each piece back to the brand before they were carefully packaged, palleted, wrapped and boxed for their container journey across the Atlantic.
