18th Century Townhouse Cabinetry
Ramsgate, Kent

This Ramsgate project called for joinery that could hold its own against a genuinely historic property. Dating from the late 18th century, the house sits among the earliest substantial homes in the town, Ramsgate had barely a dwelling of note before 1790, so a house of this age predates almost everything else on the street by a generation or more.

Rather than work around that history, we built into it: bi-folding partition doors in premium Accoya, radiator cover bookcases in Tulip wood with hand-detailed cornicing, marble-topped sideboard cupboards, and a full run of dressing room wardrobes with oak interiors.

Every piece was made bespoke for the space, from the lambs tongue mouldings and fluted architraves through to the solid brass fittings, left unlacquered so they'll tarnish naturally over the years rather than sit static and shiny. It's the kind of detailing that takes time to notice and longer to get right, which, on a house this old, felt like the whole point. Every piece was hand finished on site in Farrow & Ball's Wimbourne White, Estate Eggshell, tying the joinery together as one continuous scheme through the house.

Bi-Folding Room Partition Doors

Top-hung on a hidden sliding track, with bottom pivots that leave the floor completely undisturbed, these partition doors are made throughout in premium grade Accoya. Lambs tongue panel mouldings are applied to the recessed fields in the traditional manner, framed by fluted architraves and finished with gold leaf rosettes. Antique bronze beehive handles and firm magnetic closures complete the detail, with everything hand finished in Farrow & Ball 'Wimbourne White' (Estate Eggshell).

Ground Floor Radiator Cover Bookcases

Built to replicate the existing units, these bookcases were designed to match the set of Regency-style bookcases already in the property's formal downstairs dining room, a fitting nod to the house's late 18th century origins. Made throughout in premium grade Tulip wood, they feature fluted architraves, a bespoke decorative cornice, and reeded detail along every shelf leading edge. Bespoke black marble tops sit above removable radiator panels fitted with solid brass grilles, left un-lacquered so they'll naturally tarnish and soften with age, while solid brass strips run flush throughout the bookcase. All hand finished in Farrow & Ball 'Wimbourne White' (Estate Eggshell), with bespoke skirtings scribed to match the existing.

Radiator Cover Bookcases (Throughout)

Elsewhere in the property, the same approach was carried through in a simpler form. Made using premium grade Tulip wood with a bespoke decorative cornice, each unit conceals a removable radiator panel fitted with solid brass grilles, left un-lacquered to tarnish naturally over time. Solid brass strips run flush throughout, and bespoke skirtings are scribed to match the existing joinery. All hand finished in Farrow & Ball 'Wimbourne White' (Estate Eggshell).

Marble-Topped Sideboard Cupboards

Positioned either side of a large painting, this pair of sideboard cupboards are made in premium grade Tulip wood, with doors hung on solid brass butt hinges and glazed with bevelled-edge clear glass. Reeded detail runs along every shelf leading edge, and solid brass strips sit flush throughout. Bespoke Carrara marble tops, stepped to echo the fireplace opposite, are supplied and fitted alongside matching skirtings, with the existing wall sockets re-fitted neatly within. All hand finished in Farrow & Ball 'Wimbourne White' (Estate Eggshell).

Dressing Room Wardrobes

The exteriors are made throughout in premium grade Tulip wood, with a bespoke decorative cornice and skirtings to match the existing room, and lambs tongue panel mouldings applied to recessed fields in the traditional way, bordered by cock-bead face framing. Inside, a combination of solid and veneered oak, finished in a clear matt oil, houses bespoke soft-close drawers and solid brass clothes rails, with motion-sensor lighting fitted throughout. Full-height dressing mirrors are set into the reverse of the doors, which open to 155 degrees, and beehive cabinet handles complete the exterior. All hand finished in Farrow & Ball 'Wimbourne White' (Estate Eggshell).
